Looking to book one of the livest Dj's in Houston? Check out DJ Big Reeks to have your next event rocking.
From the beginning it has always been about the people because “they are who make the party.” Dj Big Reeks felt as if he knew the element of keeping people dancing and that has motivated him ever since.
Reeks passion for music started at his parents house parties in the early 80’s. Pretty soon he was throwing his own house parties with his brothers and creating a buzz in the hood. As the party outgrew the house, Reeks moved over to Yao Ming’s restaurant and his first monthly event was born.
Yao’s ended in 2007 after Reeks graduated college, but that one party created the pathway to what is now a full week of events including a six year residency at Fox Hollow for Sunday Funday, and seven years of The Waxaholics.
The Waxaholics was birthed from an idea that there was still a wide interest in the love for vinyl and old school/classic music in the Houston area. What started off as a monthly event at Double Cross Lounge soon became a weekly attraction that has brought vinyl Djs from not only Houston, but also Austin, Dallas, Los Angeles, and even New York. Relocating to Alley Kat has allowed for an intimate feel that a vinyl aficionado can definitely appreciate along with a concert venue upstairs. Some notables include The Houston Press naming Alley Kat in “Houston’s 10 Best Bars on Main”, Double Cross Lounge a “Top 10 Bar and Lounge” (2013) in midtown due in part to its vinyl night, and also naming Fox Hollow a “Top 10 Best Dance Club” in 2014. In 2016 Waxaholic Thursdays was nominated by the Houston Press Awards for “Best Theme”. Recent guest at Waxaholics Thursdays include Bun B, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Devin The Dude, The Cali Agents, Planet Asia, Statik Selektah, Scoop DeVille, Large Professor, and Slum Village with a guest appearance from Ma Dukes (mother of J. Dilla).
Reeks maintains a monthly hip hop party at Lucille’s (GRANDE) on third Saturdays. GRANDE has brought some great DeeJays out of state including Dj Wonder (Shade 45, Sway in the Morning), OG Chase B (Travis Scott’s DeeJay), Mick, Neil Armstrong, and a performance by Camp Lo. He also teamed up with Chef Shakti Baum of Etta’s Little Kitchen for Sunday Brunch at Bar 5015. Brunch has grown to be a Sunday Funday must experience, and was recently cited by Paper City Magazine as such.
