Matthews.  Major Charles Williams, United States Army Retired, serves as the Museum's Chief Docent.  BSNM is the only museum dedicated primarily to preserving the legacy and honor of the African-American soldier in defense of the United States of America from the Revolutionary War to present. The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is a proud member of the Houston Museum District and the Midtown Cultural Arts District. The museum is also a proud member of the Greater Houston Conventions and Visitors Bureau, Greater Houston Partnership and the Better Business Bureau. The Beginning African Americans have served proudly in every great American war. In 1866, through an act of Congress, legislation was adopted to create six all African American Army units. The units were identified as the 9th and 10th cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st infantry regiments. The four infantry regiments were later reorganized to form the 24th and 25th infantry regiments. These fighting men represented the first Black professional soldiers in a peacetime army. The recruits came from varied backgrounds including former slaves and veterans from service in the Civil War. The Nickname It is espoused by some historians that the nickname buffalo soldiers began with the Cheyenne warriors in 1867. The actual Cheyenne translation was Wild Buffalo. The nickname was given out of respect and the fierce fighting ability of the 10th cavalry. Overtime, Buffalo Soldiers became a generic term for all African American soldiers. Mission Statement: The mission of the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (BSNM) is to educate the public and to preserve, promote and perpetuate the history, tradition and outstanding contributions of America's Buffalo Soldiers from the Revolutionary War to the present. Smart Smile's program is only 10-weeks long and they only require attendance in a classroom setting on Saturdays for eight hours. During that classroom requirement their students get four hours of lecture, and four hours of hands on training with their staff of more than a combined twenty five years of experience. Their staff takes pride in not only ensuring their students are well versed in the ins and outs of the technical aspects of the dental industry, but also provide real world scenarios. Smart Smile also has a job placement program in place to assist in securing employment for all students once that have completed all their course requirements. There are also payment plans available to support the financial requirements of the program. Individuals applying for this course are required to: A) Interview with an admissions counselor and have a tour of the facility. B) Be at least 18 years of age. C) Present proof of secondary education (high school diploma or GED certificate). As a Dental Assistant student you will be required to purchase scrubs to wear during the program.There is also the Externship Requirements, An externship is intended to further qualify your training and to provide exposure to an actual working environment. You will have the opportunity to participate in the externship program, on a day-by-day basis, in multiple dental practices to provide some exposure to the various dental specialties. The externship program will become available after the sixth week of the Dental Assisting course is completed. A list of participating practices will be provided to you, or you may choose other Dental practices if desired. You may choose days and specialties in which to participate any time after the initial six weeks is completed. Externship availability is entirely dependent upon participating practice availability and schedules. Many students have been hired as a direct result of externships. They require at least 40 hours of externships; however, if you are not yet employed in the dental industry, they highly recommend continue doing them, as time permits, until a position is secured. Extra hours of externships on resumes are very important. The more, the better, as externship hours equate to experience. Also, externships can be considered working interviews in the right place at the right time, they recommend you always consider them as interviews. Smart Smile is in the business of helping people. After the passing of her husband, Mr. Bailey Duncan in 1959, Mrs. Duncan was left to run the business, for many years she successfully ran Duncan Funeral Home until her health failed. Mrs. Duncan was among one of the first black women in Texas to succeed in the funeral profession. She was a member of the Houston Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. Mrs. Duncan was also known for her generosity throughout her community by providing families in need with a funeral for their loved ones as well as an active member in her community. In February of 2002 Mrs. Annie Lee Duncan passed away leaving behind The Duncan legacy. Today Duncan Mortuary, Inc. is owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Allen and staff.
